Secret Machines – Lightning Blue Eyes

This track from “Secret Machines” starts off well and gives a good first impression with a hard bass-line and the drums being very prominent. The track carries on this way throughout, never leaving that set tone. After the starting phases of the song, i am left waiting for a killer chorus. Two minutes into the track, I’m still waiting and ooo is that it? False alarm it seems. Then finally, the chorus comes, but not the successful form I was hoping for and left praying for. Despite the lack of a killer chorus, then track remains mysteriously catchy, you will have to wait a bit, but eventually the song does pick up standard and finishes as an enjoyable
listen.

Dirty Pretty Things – Waterloo To Anywhere

After the “grand rebirth” of the infamous Mr Doherty in the form of the washing machine of drug-induced noise that we know to be Babyshambles, it was only a matter of time until his once brother in arms Carl Barat made an equally NME-glorified, straw hat adorned return with Dirty Pretty Things. Those of you who haven’t heard Bang Bang You’re Dead have probably been on holiday in Uzbekistan for the past month whilst the rest of the Great British scenesters have been erratically jerking from side to side, still in mourning from the split of the Libertines but marvelling at the double trouble that it’s caused, a bit like a child of divorce when they realise they get two birthdays for the price of one.
There’s nothing on this album that stands out to the degree of the aforementioned track, apart from maybe Small Town Playboys. It seems to be an album of regret and new starts however, with lines like “collecting junk like we don’t need” makes a not-so-subtle allusion to the habits of his former band mate. Waterloo is the album The Libertines would have made had Pete not been smacked off his tits getting driving bans. Still, it’s better than anything Babyshambles are going to throw out of their crack-pipes.

Ronan – We Got It EP

Ronan hails from Buens Aires and last year, on Late Night With Andy Caldwell, I was able to get a little taste of what Ronan can do. The tune provided on the mix CD was a massive tune, which just oozed sexiness and dance. The lead track on the EP “We Got It” is a big tune at over eight minutes in length. It’s got a very funky beat, that is incredibly infectious that it just sucks you right in. By the end you will be amazed that eight minutes has passed. “Even Better” is a bit more of a late night track, the beat is darker and moodier. “Let It Out” has a bit of a Royksopp vibe, heavy keyboards, ultimately a rather chill atmospheric event. Ronan provides us with three hopping house tracks that will certainly rank up there with the better material of the year.

Infadels – Love Like Semtex

After hearing “Jagger ‘67″ expectations for this band were very low. “Love Like Semtex” is an enjoyable disco punk tune. Musically, the bass is nice and pounding. It’s more of a rock song with the added keyboards and sythns. It’s catchy and it does get a bit annoying after awhile, once you realize it sounds at times like Jesus Jones. The track sounds a little dated sounding but still not a bad tune to bob your head to. It is rather a surprising single from a band I had written off early on.

Starsailor – Keep Us Together

This track is surprisingly alright. I have not been the bands biggest fan as of late. But I always keep giving this band another chance. The third single “Keep Us Together” lifted off “On The Outside” is a solid tune. James Walsh’s vocal on “Keep Us Together” is as good as he has sounded in ages. The “ohs and wos” give it a nice round big and epic feel. I actually found myself singing along at one point. Also, the track features some great use of the organ. The track seems like they are not trying so hard on it, this is more like a vintage Starsailor track. Now they should just release “In My Blood” to finish off the campaign.
