Jennifer O’Connor - Here With Me
September 30, 2008
Just a smattering of Alanis Morrisette in this lady’s voice, rather mellower and less angsty however, than she.Poppy and melodic, this is a nice easy album to listen to.As always with indie music, there is more under the top layer,so to speak, than first appears, and this album is no exception. With mostly acoustic guitar accompaniment, this collection of songs is a mixed bag, songs of love and extreme loss, honesty and dishonesty…..
The Church And The River is rather moving, sung against organ, drums and electric guitar, somewhat ponderous, but a very direct and simple song.
Always In Your Mind is a favourite of mine,a folky wistful ballad, with some pleasant keyboards sewn in to the song and some harmonica too.A cool song to play in the car,as is Daylight Out,which could be a great single release,if anyone from Jennifer’s record label is reading this?
I can recommend this lovely album, but there is a slightly depressing air somewhere in it.Don’t let that put you off,it is worth a place in the music scene.
There is a powerful personal message in all these songs.

School Of Seven Bells – Alpinisms
September 30, 2008
School Of Seven Bells was found by Benjamin Curtis in 2007. Benjamin was in Secret Machines but he left the band focus solely on this project. The rest of the band is made up Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. The ladies were previously in On! Air! Library! So, the band has a lot of indie pedigree to work with so they already have a leg up. They released a single a single back last summer that we really enjoyed around here but not to many things followed after that. The album reminded me a lot of A Sunny Day In Glasgow’s record “A Mundane Phonecall to Jack Parsons” but School of Seven Bells does tend to play with a little more song structure.
The record gets off to a strong start with “Iamundernodisguise.” The track features a dueling/repeating vocal behind a delicate and subdued wall of Ben Curtis guitars. They just play in the background and let all the attention go to the vocals. “Face To Face On High Places” has this very tribal intro to the track that sets up this perfect mood. The song develops into a lofty and surreal track with some of the most tender and beautiful vocals you will hear all year. “Half Asleep” is another track that follows on the appeal of the previous but with a little more structure. The track will close out a lot of mix CDs this year, well its probably more playlists now. “Wired For Light” is a welcomed change of pace on the album. The band shake things up with a track that has a tighter beat behind it with that shows incremental growth to a finish that just slowly fades away and you never really want to see it end.
“Connjur” is another track that sounds so familiar at times it is oddly comforting to listen to. The Deheza sisters both have a very gorgeous delivery and styles to their sound. It is another one of those tracks that when you listen you immediately get lost it and it could go on. “Sempiternal/Amaranth” is an eleven minute plus monster that I was happy to see the song not placed as the last track on the album.
“Alpinisms” is an album that goes along at such a fast pace that you really get lost in the mix. The songs flow between each other. The record has a lot of high moments that will be remembered for a long time here. As the year is starting to twiddle on down this is making a strong case for some end of the year notice.

O’death - Broken Hymns Limbs and Skin
September 29, 2008
Now on their third album, this Greg Jamie driven New York quartet continues to add more concrete to their foundation as the Bet Lynch of country and folk. They tease the traditionalists by starting off quite conventionally, before shooting off into goth, anti-folk and indie directions, at times, mingling together the sort of frivolity that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Brer Brian, Will Oldham and Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers are now famed for. This is best illustrated through ‘Grey Sun’, as it sets off with a sorrowful acoustic based stroll that will have you reaching for some sticks to get the campfire going, but then suddenly a tug of angst pulls on Jamie’s vocals and a rougher edge is shown;
“Hang the hardship baby, Hang the hardship baby, Hang the hardship baby.
We go to sleep and then we die.”
A free-spirited Gaelic punk strut bears out the adventure and spirit through ‘Fire On Peshtigo’, espousing religious imagery and slowly uncovering a hint of desperation in this punchy track. A deft spindling guitar intro’ to ‘Legs To Sin’ highlights the vocal eccentricity of the Cameron Bird ilk (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah). That brings out the nimbleness and yokel skirting approach of the versatile Greg. It certainly seems like he’s been drinking a lot of Baileys from a shoe. Through the frantic pop push of ‘Vacant Moan’, to the metal touching ‘A Light That Does Not Dim’. O’death keep you in a state of alert readiness, as at times you need to switch from contemplative to ready to mosh, quicker than the time it takes Girls Aloud to undertake a costume change at one of their highly praised gigs.
In order to show that they haven’t entirely desecrated the purity of country and folk, ‘Lean-To’ lobs slowly and mournfully around an acoustic base and the vocals are wistful and thoughtful. A tambourine jangle hugs the number, as though to say; “it’ll be all right”. Before a bold country ballad is unfurled. O’death has produced an album that is eccentric, adventurous and textured. It is going to be difficult to ignore them from now on, no matter how much the traditionalists try.
