Aidan Moffat & The Best Of’s – How To Get To Heaven From Scotland
Track one, The Lover’s Song was annoying initially, no music just da.. da.. da.. and sharp intakes of breath at every pause, the percussion which followed sounded man made, however as the track progressed it improved, not a great track but not too unpleasant. Track two, Big Blonde, was twangy, the vocals also sound tired and drawn. Track three, Atheists Lament, was a much better sound but personally I’d have preferred completely different lyrics to me, and I’m not religious, it sounds mildly mocking. Track seven, Ballad of the Unsent Letter, I really liked the music and it was much better suited to the sprawling vocals. Track nine, The Last Kiss was dire, it was mournful and depressing and the vocals are almost slurred, this sounds like something which is bawled out on the way home from the pub in the middle of the night, dreadful. Frankly this album won’t get to heaven, it has no appeal, nothing to redeem it, the vocals drawl and sound lazy and bored, the music attempts to incorporate some sounds of Scotland but it’s weak, dull and uninspiring album that had all the fire of a damp squib.
