Loop 2.4.3 – Zodiac Dust
Just looking at the band and album name you can come up with a good guess of what this music is all about: ambient and slow-burning. I don’t know if its still okay to call it IDM anymore, but it recalls a lot of that genre. Zodiac Dust takes the formula from some of the grandfathers of IDM and turns it on its head for a deep and rewarding experience; that, of course, means that this is not an afternoon at the beach record. Tracks like “The Existentialist” and “Clouds” have such pinpoint rhythmic motions that you get swallowed up by the noises. Take the track “Clouds,” for example; it sounds like what I would think a thunderstorm would sound like in the clouds. Then, at the end of the album, you are treated to the beautiful “Epilogue.”
Zodiac Dust was a fulfilling and worthwhile listen. It is not as rough and as in-your-face as most of the IDM and tends to blend the line between IDM and ambient. A track like ‘Underground’ that features steel drums is something different and refreshing. Zodiac Dust is worth a shot.
