Big Business – Mind The Drift
Mind the Drift is Big Business’s third release, and its a very ambitious record with a big departure from their previous two. They officially expanded to a trio by permanently added their engineer, Toshi Kasai to the band. They shy away from low end stoner rock songs and use more melodic soundscapes and vocal harmonies.
Being that the record was very different than my expectations. I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first. It took me about two weeks of sporadic listening for the album to click, but I think its great. Like best album of 2009 (so far) great. Jared Warren’s vocals are excellent. He sings with a desperation and urgency over intense and foreboding music.
It opens with Found Art, which is probably the most standard Big Business sounding song. The albums progresses with six more songs that, while still sounding like classic Big Business, have added layered dimensions that give the songs diversity. But, the most unexpected moment is the the album culmination of Theme From Big Business II, an eight-minute ambient psychedelic epic that pushes everything the band has done. Great album all the way through. Check it out (maybe a few times if needed).
