Various Artists – 500 Days Of Summer Soundtrack

500 Days Cover 150x150 Various Artists – 500 Days Of Summer SoundtrackA few months ago I saw the trailer for this film which included the song “Sweet Disposition” By The Temper Trap. That started my obsession with the band and I am sure I was not the only one at that point. I was not sure if I should hold off on the soundtrack till I saw the movie. But the tracks were to tempting to not dive right into. 500 Days Of Summer is the debut from Marc Webb who has directed music videos for Weezer and Green Day to name two. As you can imagine, music plays a major role in the movie. The Smiths must have something major to do with it with as they feature with 2 tracks and a cover.

The soundtrack starts off with a voice proclaiming “this is not a love story… this is a movie about love.” Before launching into the wonderful “US” by Regina Spektor. The opening lines of the song are a great example of the tone of the movie “They made a statue of us and put it on a mountain top. Now tourists come and stare at us.” Then we are greeted by The Smiths classic “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” that includes the line that millions of indie kids have said in their heads as they meet women. “And if a double-decker bus crashes into us to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die.”

One of the tracks that caught my attention was Carla Bruni’s “Quelqu’un M’a Dit. It was a beautiful little track that was a nice break in the middle. It allowed a smooth transition in Fiest’s Mushaboom. You can start to see things shift a little bit in the story now. They had Simon & Garfunkel followed by Wolfmother and managed to pull it off. Finally, She & Him cover The Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” and it is a gorgeous version. I really want to see how they play this in the movie. There is a lot to like in this collection from the old to the new. The soundtrack is a good time and the movie will surely be one of the better of the summer.
