Tortoise – Beacons of Ancestorship
Chicago post-rock outfit, Tortoise, has returned with Beacons Of Ancestorship, their first album of new material in almost five years. I’ve been listening to this record for something like two weeks now and still have no idea how I feel about it. The album is comprised of eleven songs with really noting in common apart from them being completely instrumental. I really have no overall feeling about this album. They use aspects of rock, jazz, techno, dub, ect. Some songs are primarily played with instruments. Others with drum loops. Its totally all over the place, which is cool, but maybe a little too much. My favorite track is Minors, which is kind of a moody synth-based track that reminds me of a horror score from thirty years ago. My only real problem is that the songs are (as I feel about most post-rock) cool ideas that never build to anything or payoff. Rather, they just repeat or just insert cool little parts.
