Yim Yames – Tribute To

yimyames 150x150 Yim Yames Tribute ToYim Yames aka Jim James is releasing an EP called “Tribute To,” a six track tribute to George Harrison, on Aug. 4. The EP does contain some of George’s most well-known moments including My Sweet Lord. Now, if Yim Yames sounds familiar it is because you know him as the lead singer for My Morning Jacket.

The EP is rather minimal with just Jim doing most of the work on the album. Jim does a nice job of breaking the songs down into their basic forms and still honoring their originals. I was especially smitten with his take of “My Sweet Lord” as it is one of those defining songs of George’s solo career. He does a remarkable job and really gets you to look at the song in a new like. The simplicity and the echoed background vocals send chills down my spine. “Long, Long, Long” and “Behind That Locked Door” are two songs that I am not all that familiar with but I found myself captivated by James’ emotional force that he brings to the tracks. “Behind That Locked Door” has slowly won me over. I even went back and tracked down the original song.

The EP is a moving tribute to a legend. It was done in away that honors both the work here and makes you want to go back and enjoy George’s originals as well.

One Response to “Yim Yames – Tribute To”

  1. I went back to All Things Must Pass this summer and fell deep in love with it, more than the last few times. "Let It Roll" is my favorite. I picked up James's humble tribute when it came out this summer, and I agree with you: it gives chills at times.

I love the austere packaging, as well.
