Review: Flaming Lips – Embryonic
Before I start this, I’m going to have to admit that I’m not really a Flaming Lips fan. I totally love Yoshimi, Soft Bulletin, and select songs off of Mystics. However, I really never go into the rest of their extensive discography. Not that I didn’t like them, but thought that stuff like Yoshimi was on a completely different musical and artistic level.
Their latest offering seems like another departure for the band. An eighteen-song Colossus filled with diversity, Embryonic doesn’t have the cohesion that the Lips’ newer albums have become known for. Which is all right. Soft Bulletin is already ten years old. Every song is very different which is kind of cool, but after seventy minutes, seems kind of a mess. Even though their are some really good songs on it, it’s hard to come away with any attachment to the album as a whole, much like a generic greatest hits album comes across.
I see that there is a limited two-disc version of the album. It makes me curious to how the songs would come across in that format. And, to be honest, in the modern days of the iPod, individual songs are really what matters, anyway. It’s definately worth checking out for any Flaming Lips fan. You won’t be disappointed, maybe a little confused.
