Review: Codeine Velvet Club – Codeine Velvet Club

cvc 150x150 Review: Codeine Velvet Club Codeine Velvet ClubCodeine Velvet Club’s self-titled debut gives us an ode to 1960s pop rock with big brass instruments thrown in and mixed with a hint of jazz. The songs are lush and lavish —orchestras, fast catchy hooks, and stunning duets. This duo is made up of Jon Lawler (of The Fratellis) and Lou Hickey. “Hollywood” is a whirlwind of these elements and defines the album in terms of sound and style. The song reminds me of 1960s Hollywood film, full of mystery and intrigue. The pop, the jazz, and the indie blend to form an unparalleled sound. Hickey’s smooth voice chimes in throughout the verses, as if she’s just a backup singer. She is anything but. Strings and brass are allowed to roam by themselves, making an elevated bridge before this duo takes it home.

Hickey’s voice soars over that brass section on “Vanity Kills.” Her voice is sexy and sultry and complements Lawler’s glossy voice. The elements of “Hollywood” are present, but there is certainly no repetition from one song to the next. The song stands on its own as a masterpiece to the genre. “The Black Roses” overflows with grandeur. A moderately paced verse bursts into a Broadway-way like chorus as Hickey belts with all her might, a large orchestra as the backdrop. Hickey’s voice is mesmerizing and dominating.

The opulence takes a back seat as the album greets a more relaxed, laid-back feel starting with “Nevada.” Lawler and Hickey’s voices slow-dance with each other, intertwining with elegance. Codeine Velvet Club’s self-titled album is filled with romanticism and the occasional dark seductive texture. Their sound is unlike any other artist in the current spotlight. Their music is rich and vivacious. I can only hope that this is not a one-time side project for this pair.
