High on Fire-Snakes for the Divine
It seems that I haven’t paid enough heed to High on Fire. The Frazetta-esque cover is what initially drew my attention. When I learned that the band spun out of Sleep, I realized that I needed to devote a closer attention.
This is a pretty solid album from start to finish. The eight songs are all pretty brutal. The production sounds great. It opens with an epic eight-minute title track. Following that is the single, Frost Hammer.
After two blisteringly speeding tracks, they slow it down with the sludgy doom track, Bastard Samurai. This is my favorite song from the album. How Dark We Pray is another great track. If anything, I think it’s the most evil song.
All in all, Snakes For the Divine is a little cliche in terms of a metal album, but the band pulls it off if not for just sheer competency. If you’re into metal about ancient gods and warriors, definitely check it out.
