Review: Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can

Laura Marling I Speak Because I Can 150x150 Review: Laura Marling I Speak Because I CanThere are eleven tracks on this second album [the follow up to Alas I Cannot Swim, which received great acclaim and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize]. This second album was released on 22 March 2010 on Virgin Records. Ms Marling has her own style, but you can hear a definite 70′s influence in her vocals[ Sandy Denny springs to mind].However “Nature of Dust” has an almost country/ rockabilly feel. This album entered the UK charts on 28/3 at No.4, and its easy to see why such a high chart placing occurred. On Rambling Man Laura Marling sings well with some lovely banjo and guitar accompaniments and tremulous female backing vocals. Ms Marling tells a story in her songs.Devils Spoke is a spirited track with some bitter banjo- it is in fact a favourite track of mine- and this is an album which grows on you.Be prepared not to be that impressed on first listen, only to be drawn in after a second one. One of the more unusual voices in indie folk at the moment.
