Isis – Wavering Radiant
This never happens: A band put out some good albums, goes downhill, loses my interest, and then puts out a really good album (this sometimes happens with solo artists; maybe its easier with one person at the helm). Isis’s new release, Wavering Radiant is an exception.
I used to really like Isis when they started out. I think they peaked in 2002 with Oceanic and went downhill. I didn’t even get their last album. This one, I love. It shows much stronger songwriting than their previous two where I thought the band was becoming stagnant and formulaic. There is a seamless mix between the heavy and the lighter ambient parts. Also, the drumming particularly strikes me as strong.
The construction of the album is pretty interesting. It’s comprised of six songs with a very short (less than 2 minute) musical interlude, the title track, in the center. I’m curious to know where the vinyl breaks are. The final song, The Threshold of Transformation, is not only a great conclusion to the album, but in my opinion is one of the best songs they have written.
