Maximo Park – Quicken The Heart

maximo park 150x150 Maximo Park Quicken The HeartMaximo Park is a five-piece indie rock band hailing from Newcastle, England. Their third debut release “Quicken the Heart” does just that, make us dance with upbeat, synth-infused tunes that are sure to please new and old fans alike. While the songs are fun and easy to listen to, they are quite predictable and lack the exciting quality of their past releases, “A Certain Trigger” (2005) and “Our Earthly Pleasures” (2007). Instead, the band maintains the same sound by following their previous formula for success; and reasonably so, since they have been previously very successful – both “A Certain Trigger” and “Our Earthly Pleasures” have gone double platinum. Although “Quicken the Heart” is sure to be a hit with fans, Maximo Park should step up their game, and quickly, before they fade into the ever-growing list of forgotten indie rock bands. While “Quicken the Heart” is by no means a bad album, Maximo Park must now deliver something new and exciting next time around to remind fans and critics what it is about them that we love. We’ll be waiting.

Singles Roundup 4-20

Up first is the Tiny Masters of Today track, Skeletons. This has minimalist guitars and repetitive lyrics over drum loops. It’s a catchy song written by young kids (ages 13 and 15).

Next is Colours by Charlotte Hatherley. This is my favorite song of the set. It”s solid power pop songwriting. There’s a classic early 90′s alternative sound to the recording.

Following that is Trip It Up by Nursery of Naughtiness. It’s an electronica song. It would play well over an action movie where our hero is coked up and kicking ass.

Finally is Maximo Park’s The Kids Are Sick Again. It’s a pretty good upbeat rock song. There’s a good use of keyboards that can be uncommon anymore. Also, the vocals remind me a little of Tears For Fears, which is always a good thing.
