Passion Pit – The Reeling
Goodbye winter, hello spring. Every year, the retreating snow unveils a cabal of music to celebrate the change of season. Just in time, comes Cambridge, Massachusetts’ own Passion Pit with the lead single, “The Reeling” from the full length debut album, Manners.
A synth pad starts this electro pop tune with a cheery yet melancholy hook, until nostalgia is smashed by a lo-fi beat that marches us onto the dance floor. The only lyrical clue toward the song’s theme comes from the question songwriter Michael Angelakos sings: “A girl who?” But the lyrics work in spite of the ambiguity. You get a better sense of the song’s meaning from the melody than its lyrics, and it doesn’t bludgeon the point of the song.
This track grows from their underground E.P., Chunk of Change, possibly promising us a fine upcoming album. The song will be quickly snatched by all of Passion Pit’s fans, while at the same time introducing more audiences to the mature songwriting ability of Michael Angelakos. The album, Manners, will be available in the UK on May 18, followed by the US release on May 19.
