Sky Larkin – The Golden Spike

skylarkingolden 150x150 Sky Larkin – The Golden Spike Sigh, another indiefroth band, from Leeds, release this album to sharpen up our ears, thought I.

Oddly, when I first watched their video of Fossil, on the band’s myspace profile, they reminded me somehow of The Partridge Family, why, I couldn’t say!!Lead singer Katie Harkin has a passing resemblance to Susan Dey, but without the squint. The music, however, is nothing like that of The Partridge Family, I’m glad to say!!

On Beeline, Katie’s voice bears nuances of Lily Allen, the backing is good, but the song somehow misses the mark.

The video to the song made me smile though, as it featured the band members being wheeled along in supermarket trolleys while Katie sings and strums electric guitar, squashed neatly into her trolley.

The band are nothing if not innovative. On their latest myspace Blog they have details of their own promo watches-with Sky Larkin etched on the watch face. Apparently these watches have sold out on pre-order….shrewd PR there.

Recorded in Seattle, this debut album (released February 9th) should hold up well amongst the first releases of 2009-thirteen tracks of concentrated indie-rock goodness.

My favourite track? Somersault, with its fairground organ break.

Sky Larkin – Fossil, I

skylarkinfo 150x150 Sky Larkin Fossil, I
Sky Larkin like everyone other band to come from Leeds over the last few years got their start releasing music on the Dance To The Radio label. There first two singles “One Of Two” and “Molten” showed a lot of promise out of the young three piece. They recently signed with the good folks at Witchita Records and finally an album will be due next year. Now, I am reviewing “Fossil, I” off a video stream so I will not be to hard on the sound quality of the recording because naturally it sounds better than what I am dealing with. But, when I heard the new single I had to get something out there. The young band have their most polished single to date. The track runs at a nice crisp 2 minutes and forty-five seconds. Katie Harkin has a voice that would sound perfect on any radio station. She sounds so familiar and friendly. This single shows that Sky will be one of the bands to look out for next year.
