Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses
I really fell for this band when their eponymous first album dropped. Their second album, “You Could Have It So Much Better”, didnt’ have a solid hit like “Take Me Out” or even a memorable song like “Dark of the Matinee” and so barely blipped my radar. I listened to “Ulysses” the first cut from “Tonight” with anticipation and hope. The inanity of the lyrics didn’t detract much from the catchiness of the melody. I thought they had recovered the spring of the first album and then we got to the chorus and it didn’t matter what the lyrics were because there were so many conflicting instruments and cross-singing voices and undercurrents that it was hard to focus on any of it. I understand technology has made advances since the first album but I’d prefer them spread over all the songs and scaled back quite a bit on this one.
